Speaking up to an intimidating boss

Uncategorized Oct 01, 2024

Many years ago, just after leaving drama school, I moved to London. In between acting gigs, I worked a variety of odd jobs to keep things going, from nightclubs to temping in offices and even working for a private detective, I did a bit of everything. One of those roles was as a PA at an accounting firm in the city.

My boss was an intimidating person who often belittled and disrespected his staff. The people who worked there were terrified to speak up, understandably so; many had families and responsibilities and didn’t want to risk their jobs.

One day, after weeks of putting up with his behaviour, I’d had enough and spoke out, letting him know what I thought about the way he treated me and others.  I then handed in my notice, fully expecting backlash.

Instead, something surprising happened: the directors called me in, thanked me for speaking up, and asked if I’d write a statement. They’d been hearing whispers about this manager’s behaviour for a while but hadn’t been able to take action because no one was willing (or able) to speak out.

In that moment, I realised the power of being able to use your voice, even when it feels risky. I needed the income but I wasn’t attached to that particular job, and had the privilege of knowing I could work elsewhere, but not everyone had that freedom. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where our voice can make a difference, not just for us, but for others too. It’s not always easy but if we can speak from a place of truth and courage, it can change everything.

And as a side note, I’ve also been in many situations where I wasn’t able to speak up, where I did need or want the job, the relationship, or situation and I understand how challenging it can be.

All of these experiences are part of what fuels my passion for this work—helping others embody their voice, feel able to speak up, and use their voice with confidence whenever they can.

This is why I created Embody Voice Confidence, a space where you can devote some time to this essential skill, get curious, explore and develop your voice, your truth, and your power without judgment or fear.
